Eid al-Adha is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow Allah's (God's) command to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Muslims around the world observe this event.

What Do People Do?
At Eid al-Adha, many Muslims make a special effort to pray and listen to a sermon at a mosque.
They also wear new clothes, visit family members and friends and may symbolically sacrifice an animal in an act known as qurbani.
This represents the animal that Ibrahim sacrificed in the place of his son.
Then interestingly.....
This practice is now followed by the Muslims
In some traditionally Muslim countries, families or groups of families may purchase an animal known as udhiya, usually a goat or sheep, to sacrifice, but this is not common or legal in many parts of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States or many other countries. In these countries, groups of people may purchase a whole carcass from a butcher or slaughterhouse and divide it amongst themselves or just buy generous portions of meat for a communal meal on Eid-al-Adha.
People also give money to enable poorer members of their local community and around the world to eat a meat-based meal.

How to Do the Zabiha (Qurbani of Animal) :
word "Udhiyah" means an animal of the a'ana'aam class (i.e., camel, cow, sheep or goat) that is slaughtered during the period after the Eid prayer on the day of Nahr (Eid al-Adha) until the last days of Tashreeq (last day being the 13th of Dhul Hijjah). It is often called Qurbani by Muslims of India and Pakistan. but the correct word for this ritual is - Udhiyah.
Points to take care of :
The animals must be free of any defect that diminishes the quality of their meat. For example, it is not valid to slaughter animals that are lame, blind, insane, or sick.
It is Only Valid (Allowed) to slaughter camels, cattle, sheep, or goats. Camels must be over five years old, cows and goats must be over two years old, and sheep must be over one year old.
It does not matter whether the animals are male or female; both arevalid to slaughter.
The animals must be taken good care of. They must be Loved. They should not be any ill-treatment of animals, as that is Sin.
______________
It is sunnah for males to slaughter themselves if they can slaughter well, although it is valid to commission (tawkeel) someone else to do it on their behalf. If one cannot slaughter well, or if one is a female, it is sunna to commission someone else to perform it on one’s behalf. If one commissions someone else to do it, it is sunna (but not necessary) to be present and witness the actual slaughter.
It is an amazing ritual with an important history and reason behind it. In order to fully appreciate it and benefit from it we need to understand the history and purpose behind it.
Ibrahim, known as Abraham in the Christian and Jewish traditions, was commanded by God to sacrifice his adult son. He obeyed and took Ishmael (Ismail or Ismael) to Mount Moriah.
Just as he was to sacrifice his son, an angel stopped him and gave him a ram to sacrifice in place of his son.
Thus, these events are remembered and celebrated at Eid al-Adha.
This "Udhiya" / Qurbani represents the animal that Ibrahim sacrificed in the place of his son.

How to Perform Zabah (Slaughter) in The Islamic Way.
°At the time of Zabah /giving qurbani the animal should be laid with its throat towards the QIBLAH.
It's a good act to Recite Dua with good intentions before the performance of Qurbani (Zabah /Zabiha)
Before the Zabah read:
َTranslation :
“For me, I have set my face, firmly and truly towards Him Who created the heavens and the earth. And never shall I give partners to Allah. Verily my worship and my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. O Allah! this sacrifice is from you and is for you”.
THEN START ZABAH
WHILE SLAUGHTERING THE ANIMAL READ:
بِسْمِ اللهِ اَللهُ اَكْبرُ
(Bismillahi AllahuAkbar)
Translation :
In the name of Allah. Allah is the greatest”.
DUA TO BE RECITED AFTER ZABAH:
اَللّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْهُ مِنِّي كَمَاْ تَقَبَّلْتَ مِنْ حَبِيْبِكَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَّخَلِيْلِكَ اِبْرَاهِيْمَ عَلَيهِمَا الصَّلوةُ وَالسَّلام
Translation :
"O Allah accept from me (this sacrifice) like you have accepted from you beloved Muhammad and your friend IBRAHEEM. (Peace be upon them) .
(if you are sacrificing on behalf of other then in place of (Minni ) مِنِّي
Recite MINN ................. and then take his name.)
{{for example - if it's a person named Abdullah and you are sacrificing animal on his behalf then say - "Minn Abdullah..."}}
If a person has NOT memorised the DUA, it is Correct / 100% okay that he slaughter the animal with the NIYYAH (Intention) of Qurbani and the recital of:
بِسْمِ اللهِ اَللهُ اَكْبَرُ
(that is - " Bismillahi Allahu Akbar")
And then does the slaughter /sacrifice (Zabah /Qurbani).
Keeping it Simple, If you know the Dua Recite it, if not then Simply Recite Bismillahi Allahu Akbar and do the Sacrifice (Qurbani) of the animal.
This is the Way prescribed by Islamic Shariah (Law of Islam).

The Islamic calendar is based on observations of the Moon and the length of a particular month can vary between years. For this reason, predicted dates of Eid al-Adha may be corrected at the start of the month of Dhul Hijjah. This is around 10 days before the start of the festival.
